Tools To Help You Swim

I've been coaching people in the pool for over 15 years.  I have coached people who were advanced swimmers and people who didn't know how to swim at all.  I recommend every person who swims regularly to use swim equipment.  Swimming equipment will help you improve your swim and also break it up so it's not so boring.  Here is a list of equipment and reasons why I recommend each piece of equipment.

  1. Pool Buoy - this goes between your legs and will help you focus on your stroke because you will not have to kick at all and the buoy will help your legs stay afloat.  Amazon - pool buoy
  2. Fins - fins are great to help beginner swimmers. It will make learning to swim a little easier.  Fins are also great to use to do drills.  Drills are important for beginner and advanced swimmers.  They help swimmers focus on certain aspects of the stroke.  Amazon Fins
  3. Kick Board - kick boards are used to practice your kick and I also have new swimmers do a few drills with their kick  board.  Amazon Kick Board
  4. Paddles - I don't recommend paddles for everyone but I do for intermediate or advanced swimmers.  They are great to improve stroke strength.  Amazon Paddles
  5. Buoyancy shorts - I recommend these for clients that have legs that sink.  They make learning to swim more enjoyable and my clients enjoy swimming.  If they enjoy it more they are more likely to come to lessons and less likely to get frustrated and stop.  Amazon Buoyancy Shorts
  6. Swim Bag - You will need a bag to carry all your equipment.  Amazon Swim Bag
  7. Snorkel -A freestyle snorkel is a great tool to use when you do drills and to work on certain aspects of the stroke.  Some people need to use a nose plug with their snorkel.  Amazon Snorkel
Using tools in the pool will help you improve your swim stroke, strengthen your stroke, and make swimming more enjoyable.

When you head to the pool make sure you always have a planned workout rather than just going and swimming laps for a designated time.  Here are a few of my favorite workouts.
